Ecosia: Planting Trees While Surfing the Web

In my previous post I told you the consequences of the most recent Amazon fires, which are still ravaging countless hectares of the lushest place on planet Earth.

I know how frustrating it is to watch all this devastation while feeling like you are unable to help. Luckily, however, there is something you can still do to support the environment without leaving your house or even making any donations.

I’m talking about Ecosia. I already suggested using it if you wanted to engage in actions that are beneficial to our medio ambiente (environment.) This time, I will explain how Ecosia works and why it is a great tool when fighting for la Madre Naturaleza (Mother Nature.)

What is Ecosia?

Ecosia is a motor de búsqueda (search engine) that works just like Google. By using Ecosia, you can search for any type of information you want. It is available on mobile apps in Android and iOS devices. It is also available on Google Chrome as a default search engine —you can download it as an extension from the Chrome web store.

It is important to mention that Ecosia is privacy-friendly, which means all your searches are encrypted and your data will never be stored, shared or sold to third parties.

Why must we start using Ecosia?

The most essential goal of Ecosia is to make the world a greener, better place. According to its website, a single búsqueda (search) on this engine equals about half a Euro cent, and planting a tree takes 0.22 euro.

This enterprise, which is based in Germany, uses approximately 80% of its profits from advertising revenues to financiar (funding) tree-planting projects all over the world, especially in areas where they are most needed —e.g. Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, Peru, or Madagascar.

Thousands of trees everywhere

Since the devastating fires started in the Amazon this year, people have looked for ways to help out. The number of Ecosia apps installed has increased by more than 1,000% according to its website.

The best news is that, thanks to the new users’ support, Ecosia has tripled its efforts in Brazil and is committed to planting three million trees in the mata atlántica (Atlantic Forest) along Brazil’s coast over the next 12 months.

It is worth remembering that trees not only absorb carbon dioxide, slowing el calentamiento global (global warming) and cleaning the air we breathe. They also provide us with nutritious food, diverse compounds for potential new medicines, and shade to protect us from the sun. So, they are our ideal partners in the fight against el cambio climático (climate change.)

For that reason, Ecosia is currently one of the best choices we Internet users could make to give a helping hand to our planeta (planet).
