In this Spanish lesson we will practice more about using both El Pretérito Perfecto and El Pretérito Indefinido to compare and understand their different uses. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening. This lesson continues on from the previous lesson in this course which also looked at El Pretérito Perfecto and El Pretérito Indefinido.

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:
Ir de copas: to go out drinking
Muchísimos: lots
Buenísimos: very good
El mejor: the best
En serio: seriously
Tienes que ir: you must go
Now play the audio to listen a conversation between two friends. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:
Ben: Hola María ¿Has estado alguna vez en Inglaterra?
María: Sí, el año pasado fui a Londres. ¿Tú has estado en Londres alguna vez?
Ben: Sí, viví en Londres durante cinco años.
María: ¿Y conoces España?
Ben: Sí, he estado en Barcelona. Fui allí hace dos años. Me gustó mucho ir de copas por Barcelona.
María: Yo soy de Madrid. ¿Has estado alguna vez en Madrid?
Ben: No. He oído hablar de Madrid, pero nunca he estado allí. ¿Está bien?
María: Madrid es una ciudad espectacular. Lo mejor son los museos. Mis favoritos son el Museo de Doña Sofía y el Museo del Prado.
Ben: ¿Museos? Yo nunca he estado en un museo. No me gustan. Son muy aburridos.
María: ¿Aburridos? ¿Y qué te gusta visitar cuando vas a una ciudad?
Ben: Me gusta comer en restaurantes e ir de copas.
María: Pues Madrid es la ciudad perfecta para ti. Hay muchísimos bares y restaurantes buenísimos. El año pasado, cuando fui a Madrid a visitar a mis padres, fuimos al restaurante Diverxo. Es el mejor restaurante de Madrid. Su comida es excelente.
Ben: ¿En serio?
María: Sí, tienes que ir.
Ben: Bueno, igual voy a Madrid algún día.
