Advanced Spanish Listening Practice – Spanish words beginning with ‘a’ tónica

In this Spanish lesson we are going to practice using Spanish words beginning with ‘a’ tónica that appear to be masculine but are in fact feminine (e.g. el agua, el hacha, el águila, el aula, el alma, el arma, el área, el hambre). As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Advanced Spanish Lesson – Spanish words beginning with ‘a’ tónica

Now play the audio to listen a conversation. Can you understand what is being said? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Patricia: Dean, tengo mucha sed. ¿Me pasas el agua?

Dean: ¿Qué agua?

Patricia: La botella que te di para que la metieras en tu mochila. ¿No la tienes?

Dean: Mmm, creo que me la he dejado en el aula.

Patricia: ¿En el aula pequeña? ¿La de clase de música?

Dean: Sí, sí. La dejé encima de la mesa y me fui. Tenía tanta hambre, que fui directo a la cafetería.

Patricia: Jo, pues a mí el hambre me está matando también. Voy a buscar el agua y vamos a comer.

Dean: Es que yo ya he comido. Acabo de volver de la cafetería.

Patricia: Bueno, pues yo voy ahora. ¿Has visto a María allí?

Dean: Sí, está comiendo ahora. Bueno, y llorando.

Patricia: ¿Llorando? ¿Por qué?

Dean: Le ha dejado su novio.

Patricia: ¡Oh no! ¡Pobrecita! Tendrá el alma destrozada. Voy a verla. ¿En qué parte de la cafetería está? ¿En el área de buffet?

Dean: Sí, sí.

Patricia: Vale, gracias Dean. Te veo luego.

Dean: Hasta luego.
