In this Spanish lesson we are going to learn and practice using vocabulary and phrases related to socialising in Spanish. First we will learn some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short audio conversation in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Socialising in Spanish:
At what time shall we meet up?: ¿A qué hora quedamos?
Is nine o’clock good for you?: ¿Te viene bien a las nueve?
That’s good / That’s not good for me: Me viene bien / No me viene bien
Where shall we meet up?: ¿Dónde quedamos?
I feel like going to… (a bar, a concert, a nightclub, etc): Me apetece ir a… (un bar, un concierto, una discoteca, etc)
We could …: Podríamos …
… go to a concert: … ir a un concierto
… go to a karaoke bar: … ir a un karaoke
Where are the best bars located?: ¿Dónde están los mejores bares?
What are you doing tomorrow / this afternoon / this evening?: ¿Qué haces mañana / esta tarde / esta noche?
Are you doing anything tomorrow / this afternoon / this evening?: ¿Vas a hacer algo mañana / esta tarde / esta noche?
Have you got any plans for tomorrow / this afternoon / this evening?: ¿Tienes planes mañana / esta tarde / esta noche?
Is there any live music on tonight?: ¿Hay música en vivo esta noche?
What time does the concert / the play / film / opera start?: ¿A qué hora empieza el concierto / la obra de teatro / la ópera?
What type of music do you enjoy?: ¿Qué tipo de música te gusta?

It’s good: Es bueno
It’s cool: Está guay / Está genial

Now play the audio to listen a conversation. Can you understand what is being said? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Carla: Hola Steve ¿Tienes planes para esta noche? Es mi primer fin de semana en Madrid y me gustaría salir.
Steve: No tengo ningún plan, pero me apetece salir, perfecto. Llevo dos años en Madrid y conozco muchos bares ¿a qué hora quedamos?
Carla: ¿a las diez te viene bien?
Steve: Sí, bien ¿Qué te gustaría hacer?
Carla: Podríamos ir a un karaoke.
Steve: ¿A un karaoke? No me gusta cantar. Prefiero ir de bares.
Carla: ¿Dónde están los mejores bares?
Steve: En el centro. El bar Trino tiene música en vivo.
Carla: ¿Sí? ¿Qué tipo de música?
Steve: Música Pop normalmente. A veces rock o punk.
Carla: ¿Hay música en vivo esta noche?
Steve: No lo sé la verdad. Pero podemos mirar en su página web.
Carla: Voy a mirar. A ver… Sí, van a tocar Los Nocturnos.
Steve: ¿Los nocturnos? Son la bomba. Tenemos que verlos.
Carla: Aquí en la página web, parecen un poco heavy.
Steve: Sí, son un grupo de heavy metal.
Carla: ¿Qué dices? Odio la música heavy. ¡Es un horror!
Steve: Bueno, podemos ir a otro sitio. ¿Qué tipo de música te gusta?
Carla: Pues… la música clásica por ejemplo. ¿Vamos a la ópera?
Steve: ¿A la ópera? Pero Carla, no me gusta nada la ópera.
Carla: Ya, vale. Bueno, pues ¿qué te parece si vamos a tomar unas copas a un bar con música pop?
Steve: Vale, buena idea. Vamos.
