In this Spanish lesson we are going to look at and practice when not to use the El Pretérito Perfecto. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Advanced Spanish Lesson – When not to use the El Pretérito Perfecto
Now play the audio to listen a conversation. Can you understand what is being said? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:
Soraya: Oye Ricky ¿Desde cuándo vives en Madrid?
Ricky: Puf, no sé. Llevo viviendo aquí casi veinte años, creo.
Soraya: ¿Tantos? Jo, cómo pasa el tiempo. Nos conocemos desde hace quince años ¿no?
Ricky: Sí, me acuerdo del día que nos conocimos. Estaba trabajando de camarero en ese restaurante italiano ¿Cómo se llamaba?
Soraya: Francos.
Ricky: Eso Francos. Mi español era malísimo.
Soraya: Ya me acuerdo. Dejaste este trabajo poco después de que nos conociéramos ¿no?
Ricky: Sí, bueno, trabajé unos años más allí. Es que mi español era tan malo que no podía encontrar un trabajo mejor. No trabajo en Francos desde hace diez años creo.
Soraya: Ahora hablas español muy bien.
Ricky: Bueno, no tan bien. Hago muchos errores. Voy a una academia desde que vine a Madrid pero todavía no hablo perfecto.
Soraya: Hombre, tienes tu acento inglés, eso está claro, pero hablas bastante bien. No creo que necesites la academia. Necesitas salir más de fiesta para practicar más español. ¡Nunca sales!
Ricky: ¡Sí que salgo! Llevo saliendo de fiesta todos los sábados desde que vine a Madrid. Pero es que los madrileños salís todas las noches. Yo no puedo llevar ese ritmo.
Soraya: Venga hombre. Que eres joven.
