In this Spanish lesson we are going to practice using Spanish prefixes and suffixes of Latin and Greek origin. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

This lesson is part of a Spanish course that practices the grammar and vocabulary first introduced in my Advanced Spanish course posted here on the Transparent Language blog. Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Now play the audio to listen a conversation. Can you understand what is being said? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:
María: Hola Tom ¿Qué tal? ¿Por qué te arrascas tanto el brazo?
Tom: Es que tengo dermatitis y el brazo me pica muchísimo.
María: ¿Has estado en el médico?
Tom: Sí, me han dado una crema. Pero no funciona. El brazo me sigue picando. ¿Tú cómo estás?
María: Regular. Anteayer tuve una revisión médica que nos hacen todos los años en el trabajo. Me dijeron que tengo hipotensión.
Tom: ¿Hipotensión? ¿Qué es eso?
María: Tengo la tensión muy baja y a veces me dan mareos.
Tom: Aaahh vale.
María: Sí, se me pone la cara de un color grisáceo y se me pone la vista nublada. Es horrible. También me dijeron que tengo otitis. Por eso me duelen tanto los oídos últimamente.
Tom: Oh pobre. ¿Te han dado alguna medicina?
María: Sí, para la otitis un antibiótico. Para la hipotensión me han dicho que coma más frutas y verduras y me han dado también unas vitaminas. Tengo una cita con el endocrinólogo en un mes para ver si tengo un problema de tiroides.
Tom: Bueno, espero que no sea nada.
María: Sí, eso espero. Ya te contaré.
