Hace cinco años viajamos a Mazatlán para celebrar el Carnaval. Fue una experiencia inolvidable y muy divertida (Five years ago, we traveled to Mazatlan to celebrate Carnival. It was an unforgettable experience and so much fun). In this post I’ll take a look back at celebrating Carnaval in Mazatlán while we await the city’s decision on whether or not celebrations will happen this year.

An Intro to Carnaval in Mazatlán

El Carnaval de Mazatlán es una de las fiestas más grandes del mundo. Este es el tercer carnaval más grande después de Río de Janeiro y Nueva Orleans. Más de un millón de personas vienen a la ciudad cada año. Es la celebración más antigua de su tipo en México. Siempre ocurre en los seis días anteriores al miércoles de ceniza.

The Carnaval of Mazatlan is one of the biggest parties in the world. This is the third-largest Carnival after Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. Over one million people come to the city every year. It’s the oldest celebration of its kind in Mexico. It always occurs in the six days before Ash Wednesday.

Hay muchos eventos diferentes a lo largo de la semana. El jueves hay la coronación del Rey de la Alegría y el Baile de Fantasía. Los Juegos Florales son el viernes, seguidos de la coronación de la reina del Carnaval el sábado. Esa noche es la Quema del Mal Humor, que suele ser un político impopular.

There are many different events throughout the week. On Thursday there’s the coronation of the King of Joy and the Masquerade Ball. The Flower Games are on Friday, followed by the coronation of the queen of Carnival on Saturday. That night is the Bad Mood Burning, which is usually an unpopular politician.

Mucha gente viene al Malecón para ver el espectáculo de fuegos artificiales y escuchar música de banda. Hay muchos vendedores de comidas y bebidas, como margaritas y tacos. ¡Es una gran fiesta toda la noche!

Many people come to the Malecon to see the fireworks display and listen to banda music. There are many vendors selling food and drinks, like margaritas and tacos. It’s a huge party all night long!

El domingo se realiza el Primer Desfile de Carnaval con cientos de artistas y decenas de carrozas. Cada año tiene un tema diferente, como dragones y alebrijes. Ellos son criaturas míticas en México. Es un evento muy interesante que es divertido para todas las edades.

On Sunday there is the Inaugural Parade with hundreds of performers and dozens of floats. Every year has a different theme, such as dragons and alebrijes. They are mythical creatures in Mexico. It’s a very interesting event that’s fun for all ages.

Our Experience at Carnaval

Tomamos el autobús a Mazatlán desde Puerto Vallarta. Fue un viaje largo que duró ocho horas. Pasamos algunas noches en la ciudad para el Carnaval. Alquilamos un hermoso apartamento en la Isla de La Piedra. Tenía una bonita terraza y un jacuzzi.

We took the bus to Mazatlan from Puerto Vallarta. It was a long trip that took eight hours. We spent a few nights in the city for Carnival. We rented a beautiful apartment on Stone Island. It had a nice terrace and a jacuzzi.

Durante el día, nos relajamos en la playa y comimos deliciosos mariscos. Por la tarde tomamos el ferry al centro de la ciudad para explorar. Puedes sentir el ambiente del Carnaval donde quiera que vayas.

During the day, we relaxed on the beach and ate delicious seafood. In the afternoon we took the ferry to the city center to explore. You can feel the Carnival atmosphere everywhere you go.

Por la noche, fuimos al Malecón. Comimos muchos tacos, bebimos margaritas con mucho tequila y escuchamos música en vivo. Aunque no nos gusta mucho la música de banda, nos divertimos mucho. ¡El carnaval en Mazatlán es una gran experiencia y te recomendamos que lo pruebes!

In the evening, we went to the Malecon. We ate lots of tacos, drank margaritas with lots of tequila, and listened to live music. Although we don’t like banda music very much, we had a lot of fun. Carnival in Mazatlan is a great experience and we recommend you try it!
