Hey, everybody, it’s another installment of The Setlist! The column where we don’t just fulfill our promise of filling you in on all the great live shows to check out in the city of Buenos Aires for the week, but we also give you a taste of the bands you can check out, struggle for synonyms for the word “dreamy,” and express our various neuroses through convoluted metaphors!
What’s on our minds this week? Well, seeing as how the chill of June has settled in, we’re meditating on change, mortality, the various ends of sundry eras, and the raging debate around the new Kanye album. But how about we take our minds off all of that for a moment, and warm up a bit in the process, with some live shows?
Check the playlist below to get a taste of the artists featured in this week’s Setlist (at least the ones we could find on Spotify)! And don’t forget to follow BubbleAr on Spotify for our weekly Setlist picks, and much more!
Thursday | June 7
Adan Jodorowsky and La Familia de Ukeleles at Palermo Club
Ah, the sweet sounds of acoustic instruments. If you’re as much of a fan of sweetly plucked string instruments and sensibly shorn beards as we are, come see the folksy French-Mexican singer-songwriter Adan Jodorowsky as he hits the Palermo Club stage, with support by the even-quirkier-than-you’d-think sextet La Familia de Ukeleles.
9 PM | AR $385 | Palermo Club | Jorge Luis Borges 2454
Montarosa & Yo Ni El Espejo at Clasico Fernandez
Hey, speaking of acoustic instruments: it’s been a while since we featured Clasico Fernandez, one of our favorite spots in the city thanks to its great drinks and wonderfully anachronistic mix of jazz-and-punk club stylings. They continue to showcase a great lineup of artists: this time around, singer-songwriter Montarosa will be playing with her full band, along with duo Yo Ni El Espejo. You can make reservations by emailing the venue.
9 PM | Free entry! | Clasico Fernandez | Piedras 1020
Lucas & The Woods at La Tangente
Or, if you want something considerably poppier, come to La Tangente and check out the anthemic synth-pop sounds of Lucas & The Woods, at the official presentation of their new material titled Pensacola Radio. They’ll be transporting you with their huge choruses, irrepressible guitar solos, and gated-reverbed drums right back to the glimmering days of the late-eighties (when most of you weren’t even born yet, ugh).
8 PM | AR $250 | La Tangente | Honduras 5317
Friday | June 8
Indie Go!: Atrás Hay Truenos • Los Siberianos • Pyrámides
And speaking of cool venues, it doesn’t get much cooler than former-factory-cum-hipster-cutural-center Ciudad Cultural Konex, where a number of awesome music shows are regularly hosted. This time around, the fifth installment of Indie Go festival rolls around, showcasing a mix of established musicians and up-and-coming talents. This edition will feature the talents of the mighty Atrás Hay Truenos, indie-rockers Los Siberianos, and shoegazers Pyramides.
Midnight | AR $150 | CIUDAD CULTURAL KONEX | Sarmiento 3131
Zamba vs. Black Pope Francis, Aislamiento, Zenker
Meanwhile, if what you’re in the mood for is something considerably louder, harsher, more abrasive, here’s an intriguing show that promises a lot of exactly that: come get your faces torn off at a secret location, courtesy of purveyors of drone and noise such as Aislamiento and Black Pope Francis. Make sure you PM the event for details.
10:30 PM | Secret location | PM the event for address!
Niceto Black #4
On the absolute opposite end of the “danceability” spectrum we have this very danceable party at Niceto. It’s the new installment of the Niceto Black series, this time showcasing the talents of Juan Ingaramo and Defensa. Come dance your cares away (or at least stave them off momentarily).
Midnight | AR $200 | Niceto | Niceto Vega 5510
Saturday | June 9
Damsel Talk and José Balé at Congo
Every Saturday throughout the month of June, Congo will be hosting a performance by the duo of singer Damsel Talk and percussionist José Balé. Their pairing makes for a surprising combination of musical, theatrical and improvisational elements, resulting in one of the most unique shows we’ve seen in recent memory.
9 PM | AR $150 | Congo | Honduras 5329
Halsey at the Gran Rex
Meanwhile, millennial pop juggernaut Halsey will be bringing her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom world tour to the legendary Gran Rex stage, with support from former Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui. If you have a thing for despairingly catchy pop songs delivered with a defiant sneer at a gorgeous theater, this is the show to satiate that hyper-specific craving.
6 PM | AR $1,450 | Teatro Gran Rex | Av. Corrientes 857
FESTI Nuevos Aires
We wrap up our musical week with this two-day extravaganza. Nuevos Aires is celebrating its third year on the air via El Sr Bivachi Radio Online by throwing an all-out celebration of independent music in the city of Buenos Aires. This lineup is an embarrassment of riches, featuring the eclectic sounds of Noelia Recalde, Juan Farré, Emilio Cardone, Facundo Galli, Ruiseñora (a musical duo made up of the excellent María Pien and Lucila Pivetta), El Gnomo & La Filarmónica Cósmica and more surprises to be announced! And remember: this is a two-day event, so it takes place both on Saturday and Sunday. It promises to be a wonderful celebration of the resilience and fiercely DIY spirit of the Buenos Aires indie scene.
9 PM | AR $180 | VUELA EL PEZ club de arte | Av. Córdoba 4379
That’s all for this week, folks! Thanks for reading our humble roundup of great live music to check out in this wonderful mess of a city this week. A quick reminder: you can e-mail us at email@example.com for feedback, suggestions, ideas on shows to cover, hawking your own wares, or just to say hi! We love to hear from you.
