The Setlist: Live Music in Buenos Aires, February 7 Edition | BA

Welcome, everybody, to a brand new installment of The Setlist, your weekly guide to the exciting new world of cryptocurrency! Wait, what? No, that’s not what we do. We’re here to show you all the best local shows that the rich and vibrant Buenos Aires music scene has to offer. Jeez, sorry for the slip-up there; it’s so hot that we’re finding it hard to think straight. It’s around this time every year that we find ourselves wondering how is it that we even survive the oppressively hot and sticky Buenos Aires summer. Fast forward to a particularly chilly August night and we’ll be remembering this sweltering heat fondly. That’s the inherent tragedy of the human condition, isn’t it? We’re always wanting what we can’t have. Can we ever even be truly happy? What exactly is it that I’m aching for when I catch myself staring longingly out my window? What’s this feeling inside of m–

Whoa!  Whoops. Sorry. It’s the heat again. Let’s talk about some live music, yeah?

Thursday | February 8

Exequiel Maffei – Fran Muñoz – Tin Avancini at La Gran Jaime

You know, sometimes the lineups we feature here are kind of disparate and unwieldy, with a mish-mash of genres and styles coalescing into this gloriously messy night of music, like a big bowl of musical jambalaya. And sometimes, you get a set of acts that go so perfectly together, it’s more like a bowl of…  uh, I dunno, ice cream? Our metaphor fell short there. The point is: singer-songwriters Exequiel Maffei, Tin Avancini and Fran Muñoz go really well together, all three making very skillful and expressive music that may be rooted in various rhythms and styles, but seem perfectly matched with each other. And there’s a second point: we could really go for some ice cream right now.

9 PM | La Gran Jaime | Aráoz 832

Jueves De Clásico: Roma Volsch, Juliett Lucy, Damsel Talk, Cristian Daniel Daus, Emily And

Clasico Fernandez is legit one of the coolest venues in town. Is it a divey punk club? Is it a swanky jazz bar? The answer is somewhere in between (though probably slanted slightly towards the jazz-bar aesthetic). Every Thursday they host their Jueves de Clásico series, featuring both established and up-and-coming musicians. This time around, they’ll be joined by Roma Volsch, Juliett Lucy, Damsel Talk, Cristian Daniel Daus, and Emily And.

8:30 PM | Pay what you can! | Clasico Fernandez | Piedras 1020

Antifascistas Contra Toda Autoridad

Come get revolutionary at this punk festival taking place at the legendary Salón Pueyrredón, featuring acts such as Scarponi, Lourdes from Todos Los Problemas, Buenos Aires de Oro, Kaos Escobar, and various poets and artists joining together to speak out against homophobia, transphobia and all forms of oppressive authority. When I was 13 I got sent home from school for scrawling “AGAINST ALL AUTHORITY” on the back of my English textbook. Against All Authority were a crusty ska-punk band from Florida, but I didn’t know that at the time; I just thought it was a cool sticker that the singer from Green Day had on his guitar. Anyway, that’s my story of teenage punk rebellion.

9 PM | AR $100 | Salón Pueyrredón | Avenida Santa Fe 4560

 Friday | January 26

Las Ligas Menores and Las Bermudas at La Tangente

Las Ligas Menores were one of the big surprises for me at the Laptra festival that took place at Konex late last year. Not because I wasn’t expecting them to be good – I was already familiar with their particular brand of spunky-yet-laid-back guitar rock – I just didn’t expect those songs to feel as huge and energetic as they did, or for the audience to transform these unassuming little pop-rock songs into boisterous, stadium-ready singalong anthems. They proved themselves to be one of those bands that absolutely should be experienced live, so go check ’em out. They’ll be playing at La Tangente with support from melodic indie-pop outfit Las Bermudas.

Midnight | AR $150 | La Tangente | Honduras 5317

Los Páramos, Fanzine and Obrero y Parásito at Ciclo NTN

Noche/TRANZ/Noche is a creative collective and record label that’s also putting together this live concert series showcasing up-and-coming talents; this time around, they are joined by post-punkers Los Páramos, noisy shoegazers Fanzine, and the dark, dreamy acoustic sounds of Obrero y Parásito.

9 PM | JJ Circuito Cultural | Jean Jaures 347

La Cara de los Ultimos · Audia Valdez · Lúdico at Pomo

Synth-laden indie-rock band La Cara de los Ultimos is playing their first show of 2018, showcasing their excellent second album Un Puente Invisible. They’ll be taking the POMO stage with support from poet, visual artist, singer-songwriter and fellow synth enthusiast Audia Valdez as well as colorful indie-rockers Lúdico.

9:30 PM | POMO Distrito de Arte | Santa Rosa 5157

Festival Mínima Discos!

Come get silly at Mínima Discos’s 2018 kickoff party, commemorating a fresh new year that’s full of potential as well as showcasing the label’s roster of bands and solo acts. This will also be a celebration of the spirit of staunch independence of the Buenos Aires underground scene. The festival will feature Mauro Valenti, Palmer and Los Sagan, as well as acoustic sets from Chelo Lares and Acid Caramels.

8 PM | AR $100 | El Emergente Bar | Francisco Acuña de Figueroa 1030

Fiesta POWE

Meanwhile, Fiesta POWE offers up a night of strange and unusual sounds, featuring the ghostly throwback sounds of Mansibal and the disembodied electro-rock of Pablo Neptuno. Thrown by the organizers of the sadly defunct FIESTA COOL GHOST (RIP), the party features two live acts, as well as an impressive collection of rare house, hip-hop, disco, techno and dance hall vinyl for sale.

11 PM | AR $100 | Espacio Cultural Mi Casa | Agüero 787

Saturday | February 10

Noche de Carnaval: Morbo y Mambo + Peces Raros

Come celebrate the official kick-off of carnaval by dancing your deadlines away with Morbo y Mambo and their kinetic blend of funk, pop, rock and native rhythms, as well as the lively, danceable pop-rock attack of Peces Raros. That’ll hold you over until the memory of those deadlines, and the accompanying dread, starts creeping back on you sometime around Monday night. But that’s what alcohol’s for.

Midnight | AR $200 | Niceto Club | Niceto Vega 5510

Las Jovenes Idealistas, Javi Punga, Los Totales, Tomi 100p

Alternatively, you could get your kicks from bright and sunny melodies over chunky power chords paired with serpentine arpeggiated guitar lines and big, lumbering drums. If this is what you’re looking for, this line-up has the cure for what ails you: it features the power pop of Los Totales, the understated indie rock of Las Jovenes Idealistas, the wistful, shoegazy lo-fi of Tomi 100p, and the upbeat, droney psychedelia of Javi Punga.

9 PM | AR $80 | POMO Distrito de Arte | Santa Rosa 5157

Ex-colorado // Guazuncho // Aharon Emery

Producer, singer-songwriter and veritable one-man-band Ex-colorado takes the Mi Casa stage to showcase his nostalgia-laden synth-rock, along with the experimental soundscape of Guazuncho and a set by the lead singer of Paraguayan band EEEKS, Aharon Emery, showcasing his solo EP.

10 PM | Espacio Cultural Mi Casa | Aguero 787

Singers 3 @ Jammingus

And finally for this week: a little bit of vocal jazz to wrap things up. This is the 7th installment of the Jammingus series (formerly Jazzercoles). This time around, singers Guadalupe Hidalgo & Sabrina Aranda take the mic, accompanied by musicians Ezequiel Angeleri on guitar, Gonzalo Aldás on bass and Athos García on the drums. Take a load off. It’s a hot one.

9:30 PM | AR $120 | Jammingus | Humahuaca 4027

A quick reminder. We want to make sure we cover as much material as possible each week; but with a scene this active, a lot can slip through the cracks. So, in our effort to remain on top of things, we’ve set up an e-mail address where you – that’s right, you, dear reader – can submit your own suggestions for shows for us to cover.
