In this Spanish lesson we will practice using irregular verbs of El Condicional, which corresponds to the conditional ‘Would’ tense in English. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

These are the rules of how to conjugate the irregular verbs:

Irregular vebs that remove the vowel “e”:

Caber: cabr-: cabría: It would fit
Haber: Habr-: habría: There would be
Poder: podr-: podría: He/She would be able
Querer: querr-: querría: He/She would want
Saber: sabr-: sabría: He/She would know

Irregular verbs that remove the “e” and add a “d”:

Poner : pondr-: pondría: He/She would put
Tener: tendr-: tendría: He/She/It would have
Valer: valdr-: valdría: It would cost
Venir: vendr-: vendría: He/She would come
Salir. saldr-: saldría: He/She would leave

Others:
Decir: dir-: diría: He/She would say
Hacer: har. haría: He/She would do

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:

Película: film
Terror: horror
Obra: theatre play
Depende: it depends

Now play the audio to listen a conversation between two friends. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Sonia: Hola Mark
Mark: Hola Sonia
Sonia: Pensé que no vendrías tan pronto. ¿Querrías ir al cine esta noche?
Mark: Sí claro ¿Qué te gustaría ver?
Sonia: Yo vería una película de terror.
Mark: ¿De terror? No me gustan las películas de terror. ¿Podríamos ver una película de acción?
Sonia: Oh no. No quiero. ¿Harías algo por mí?
Mark: ¿Qué?
Sonia: ¿Vendrías conmigo al teatro en lugar de al cine?
Mark: Vale, podría ir al teatro contigo, pero depende de qué obra.
Sonia: Vale. Voy a mirar qué obras hay y te digo.
Mark: Muy bien.
