Compared to neighboring Uruguay, Argentina seems to have been left behind when it comes to marijuana. Not really legal here and hard to get your hands on across the River Plate (unless you have a few Uruguayan friends), it’s also a challenge to find high-quality herb in general.
Given this rather underwhelming panorama, growing your own could be your best bet. But how, you ask? Most of us can’t even keep a houseplant alive for more than a few days, let alone delve into the complicated world of cannabis cultivation.
Thinking about light hours, soil PH, light cycles, temperature, and flowering plants can all be a bit of a headache, especially if you’re not even able to remember when you’ve last watered it. After all, us millennials aren’t necessarily known for our ability to function in society without struggling (don’t judge). Luckily, there’s a solution for this – available from the comfort of your own phone!
Life is easier when someone’s already done the hard graft for us. Google Play app “Grow With Jane” (not yet available on Windows or iOS App Store), created by Argentine Nicolás Zucconi and a few of his friends, is here to track your plant’s progress and provide you with helpful reminders about nutrients, water, and anything else you may need to encourage a bit of weed growth.
With over 20,000 downloads on the Google Play store and around 7,000 active users, “Grow With Jane” provides the novices of the weed growing world with handy hints while also providing access to an online weed community. The app is a great place to share tips and advice with like-minded stoners and aficionados.
“Grow With Jane” is also all about demystifying the growing process for those who require cannabis for medicinal purposes. The app strongly supports the use of weed for pain relief for chronic or long term illnesses. For example, ‘Mamá Cultiva,’ an organization formed by mothers with chronically ill children, uses the app to help grow cannabis for pain relief against conditions such as epilepsy.
Of course, “Grow With Jane” is equally supportive of the recreational use of marijuana and is well aware of the growing global trends supporting this. According to the United Nations, there are currently between 180 and 260 million users worldwide.
With the upward trend of marijuana legalization, (10 U.S states now offer recreational weed legally, along with 30 others where medicinal usage is legal), the app couldn’t come at a more useful time. As more people look for step-by-step guides to successful weed growth, “Grow With Jane” fills this niche.
But before we get all get too excited and turn our apartment into a cannabis greenhouse, let’s talk about the boring part – the local law of the land.
In all honesty, the law is hazy with weed here in Argentina. Cannabis is not legal, but possession of a couple of plants for personal use has been decriminalized since 2009, so a few grams here and there for personal use shouldn’t give you too much trouble. A legal loophole allows police officers to prosecute if they so wish; however, according to Federal Prosecutor Federico Delgado, 100 percent of cases against those in possession of weed are thrown out of court – so that’s a relief.
While cannabis laws may be cloudy and a bit lax on the possession front, the selling of weed is definitely illegal. If you decide to download the app, just keep the fruits of your labor for your own personal use. “Grow With Jane” protects the identity and anonymity of its users, allowing you to keep your growing habits private. So, if you end up with a magical marijuana micro-jungle growing in your bedroom closet, your secret is safe with Jane.
