In this Spanish lesson we will practice more using the Spanish Past Simple grammar tense: El Preterito Indefinido. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening. This lesson continues on from the previous lesson in this course which also looked at El Preterito Indefinido.

This lesson is part of a Spanish course that practices the grammar and vocabulary first introduced in my beginner Spanish course posted here on the Transparent Language blog. Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Beginner Spanish Lesson 39 El Preterito Indefinido
Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:
Película: movie
Aburrirse: to get bored
Malísimo/a: very bad
Alegrarse: to be pleased
Now play the audio to listen a conversation between two friends. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:
Tim:¡Hola Sonia! ¿Qué tal el fin de semana?
Sonia: Muy bien. El sábado cené en un restaurante con mi amiga Ana. Es un restaurante muy bueno.
Tim: ¿Sí? ¿Cómo se llama?
Sonia: Mmmm No me acuerdo. ¿La Casita o La Caseta?
Tim: ¿La Casona?
Sonia: Eso, sí sí. La Casona. La comida es muy buena ahí.
Tim: ¿Y qué cenasteis?
Sonia: Yo cené una paella y Ana cenó verduras a la plancha.
Tim: Mmmm suena muy rico.
Sonia: ¿Y tú qué hiciste el sábado?
Tim: Fui al cine.
Sonia: ¿Fuiste solo?
Tim: Sí, me gusta ir al cine solo.
Sonia: ¿Y qué película viste?
Tim: Vi ‘La sombra de la mentira’. Me aburrí mucho. Es una película malísima.
Sonia: Oooh Qué mal…
Tim: No pasa nada. Luego fui a mi bar favorito y me lo pasé muy bien.
Sonia: ¡Ah bueno! Me alegro.
